Getting To and Around Arran

Arran is suprisingly accessible, particularly from the port of Ardrossan which is under an hour away from Glasgow, and Prestwick Airport. It is the most southerly of the inhabited West Coast Islands of Scotland and as such is also very easy to get to from the North of England, and a great place to start an island hopping holiday.

Golf

There are no less than seven golf courses on Arran which means that there is are more courses here per head of population than anywhere else in the world. It is possible to purchase a pass to play on all seven.  Available from the golf courses and most guest hosues and hotels.

Wildlife

Arran is home to some of Scotland's most iconic wildlife including red deer, red squirrels, otters, hen harriers and the beautiful golden eagle. During the summer months there are guided walks on offer with the RSPB and the National Trust for Scotland Ranger Service.

COAST's main aim is to set up a No Take Zone and Marine Protected Area in Lamlash Bay. The organisation boasts some 1800 members from all over the world although it is composed mainly of islanders from Arran.

The Castle Gardens provide an unrivalled experience from the formal walled garden to its woodland walks. Brodick holds three national collections of rhododendron that flower in almost every month of the year. The Park extends from seashore to mountain top with over ten miles of way-marked trails and abundant wildlife.

The Arran distillery is situated in Lochranza at the Northend of the island.  It is possible to tour the distillery and indulge in a tasting session. There is also a restaurant and shop on site.

Weather and Conditions

Arran has its own unique weather patterns and is often warmer and dryer than other Scottish destinations. The weather is very much governed by a maritime regime and the prevailing winds are warm and wet and usually from the Southwest. The weather can be quite changeable, so it is very important to get a forecast before you set out. It may also be warm and sunny at one end of the island and absolutely tipping it down at the other!
